Hook Props on Tested
8 September 2026Hook in Concert will have its French premiere in February 2027, performed by the Sinfonia Pop Orchestra under the direction of conductor Jordan Gudefin.
Jordan Gudefin recently sat down with French influencer Benjamin Brillaud, aka Nota Bene, for a two-hour conversation about conducting, orchestras, film music, and the various projects currently being prepared by the Sinfonia Pop Orchestra.
Hook in Concert naturally comes up during the discussion.
One part of the interview is particularly interesting from a Hook perspective. Jordan Gudefin and Nota Bene look back at the very origins of cinema and film music, recalling that during the silent film era, screenings were very often accompanied live by musicians. This tradition itself inherited something from theatre and opera, where musicians had long accompanied performers on stage. Long before the modern film concert as we know it today, live music was already deeply connected to both dramatic performance and the cinematic experience.
The connection with Hook is quite clear. The film does not open in Neverland, but in a theatre, during a performance of Peter Pan accompanied by a musician. In a way, Hook itself begins with that meeting of live performance, image, and music that now lies at the heart of the film concert format.
This aspect was also central to the film’s original intentions. Hook himself was initially meant to be accompanied by Smee on the accordion during his speeches. This diegetic musical accompaniment was intended to heighten the theatrical quality of his appearances and turn each one into a fully staged dramatic moment.
The interview of course goes well beyond Hook and also offers a better understanding of the conductor’s role, the work involved in leading an orchestra, and the particular challenges of performing music written for the screen or the stage.
